During what was going to be the homecoming and the marriage celebration, Dantes is placed under arrest and taken away, without any explanation. There is another that envies Dantes simply out of avarice. This is Mercedes’ cousin, Fernand, who wants Mercedes for himself. There is another young man who is envious of Edmond Dantes because he has the love of the beautiful Mercedes. So he devises a plot to rob young Edmond Dantes of every bit of happiness. It would seem that Danglers would envy and take all happiness away from Dantes, just because Danglers is not capable of truly feeling happiness and contentment himself. Edmond Dantes is a pure, happy soul who has aroused hatred in Danglers, who is is jealous of his good fortune in being named captain. He has everything in life to look forward to.īut like the snake in the Garden of Eden, there is one who is jealous of his good fortune, Mr Danglers, whose every hope in life is made of avarice. He is off to see his beloved father and his soon to be wife, the lovely Mercedes, both of whom are waiting for him. Unfortunately the captain of the ship died during the trip but because of the way Edmond brought the ship safely home, the owner of the ship, Mr Morrel, has told him that he will become the captain. He has just completed a successful voyage.

Essentially Monte Cristo is planning and scheming his revenge on the people who betrayed him, but it isn’t really clear what he’s doing. I even had to put it down for a couple months. The second third of the book kinda lost me for a bit. You really feel for Dantes as all these awful things happen to him simply because of jealousy and corruption. The first third of the book starts out fast and exciting.

In reading other reviews, I am told that the Penguin Classic translation is much, much better and after reading the examples provided, I see it is better. In any case, some of the sentence structures are flat out bizarre and confusing.

The original was written in French and the Kindle version I read appears to have been translated by an automated service, with maybe some manual human intervention. My only caution is that I would make sure to pick a version with a good translation. So I encourage everyone to read this book as you will not be disappointed. And after having read it, I wholeheartedly agree.
